As you know, Climate Change is actually one of the most environmental challenges, and access rights are closely related to mitigation and adaptation processes. Access rights play a very important role involving communities, governments, business, citizens and other stakeholders in decision making respect the climate governance.
The Urgent Need To Take Democracy Beyond "The Ballot Box"
Principle 10 of the Rio declaration was motivated by the fact that environmental issues must be addressed by all those affected by their outcome, not just by governments and industrial sectors. It captures the principle of equal rights for all those in the environment debate - including the public, community groups, advocates, industrial leaders, workers, governments, academics and health care professionals.
Some New Resources about the Aarhus Convention
I want to share a useful resource that I picked up at the 3rd Meeting of the Parties of the Aarhus convention in Riga, Latvia. The last resource in this list was provided to me by Fe Sanchis Moreno, an erstwhile access practitioner in Spain. These are in English and Spanish. These can be useful for access practitioners in Europe since they deal with the guidelines established by the European Union for the application of the convention in member countries.
Yale Conference on Environmental Governance & Democracy
Yale University is holding a very important conference on environmental governance and democracy from 10-11 May, 2008. “Bridging research and capacity development” is a key goal of this conference. The event brings together academic experts and practitioners from governments, inter-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector.
